Arjuna Awards in India, Sports AwardsArjuna Awards in India are introduced for recognising the exceptional accomplishments of the players in National sports. Arjuna Awards were introduced by the Government of India in the year 1961. Arjuna Award includes a bronze statue of Arjuna, a scroll and a cash reward of Rs. 5, 00, 000. The Government of India has recently revised the scheme for the Arjuna Award. According to the guidelines, to be eligible for the Award, a sportsperson should not only have had good performance consistently for the previous four years at the international level with excellence for the year for which the Award is recommended, but should also have shown qualities of leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of discipline.

Since the year 2001, the Arjuna Award is awarded in cases of the categories including Sports for the Physically Challenged, Commonwealth Games/ Olympic Games/ World Championship Disciplines/ Asian Games/ World Cup and also in the category of Indigenous Games. During the middle of August 2011, as many as 19 Indian athletes had received the Arjuna Awards, and during 2012, 25 sportspersons were granted the Arjuna Awards.

Bengal Rowing Club
Bengal Rowing Club (BRC) is located in Kolkata in West Bengal. This rowing club is one of the most famous rowing clubs in India. GD Birla, on the site of a former lakeside bank of Rabindra Sarobar, founded the club on 25th August 1929. BRC Students Rowing Championship is the biggest sporting event of Bengal Rowing Club (BRC). It is organized annually in mid May. The championship is organized in several categories, which include 'Junior Girls, Fours’, 'Senior Girls, Fours', 'Junior Boys, Fours' and 'Senior Boys, Fours'.

Calcutta Rowing Club
Rowing Clubs in IndiaCalcutta Rowing Club is situated in the city of Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal and founded in the year 1858 and is also one of the oldest rowing clubs of its kinds outside UK. History of Calcutta Rowing Club has not been known. The exact history has been wiped out of Kolkata, after the city experienced the great cyclone in the year 1864. The boat and boat house, along with minute books and all the records have been disappeared. Out of the catastrophe, the only thing that could be preserved were the Accounts of 1858-59 signed by Mr.John Cowle, as the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer, and he goes down in history as the first officer on record. Currently the club is located at the 15 Rabindra Sarobar, Kolkata-700029, after the construction of the Dhakuria Lake in 1928. Ever since 1979, the CRC has been able to maintain its position and status in the rowing scene.

Hockey is the national game of India and Indian Hockey Tournaments have been organised at the district level, state level, and national level. Hockey has a glorious history in India. They are also organised at junior and senior levels, for both men and women hockey players. The tournaments play an important role in bringing out new talents for Indian hockey, from the grass route levels. Apart from the domestic tournaments, India also organises many regional and international tournaments at regular intervals. The Indian hockey tournaments are famous around the world for their high standard of playing.

Early Indian Hockey Tournaments
The Beighton Cup was the first hockey tournament organised in India. It was organised in Kolkata in the year 1895. Another tournament, the Aga Khan Cup was incepted in the following year, 1896 and was organised in Mumbai. The Senior National Hockey Championship for Men started its journey in the year 1928. The United Province became the champions of the inter-state tournament's first edition. The Senior National Hockey Championship for Women was instituted in 1947-48 and is organised regularly since then. While most of the Indian hockey tournaments are organised by the hockey governing bodies like Indian Hockey Federation and the state Hockey associations, there are a few that are organised by the corporate houses. Origin of Table Tennis
Though the game was originally invented in England during the 1880s, Table Tennis in India started its journey during the first half of the twentieth century. The popular game of Table Tennis in India is commonly known as Ping-Pong in India. The game is played on a rectangular table divided by a net in the centre. Two or four players can play the game at a time and the players usually hit a ball to and fro over the net, with the help of a small bat.

Table Tennis is actually a smaller version of Lawn tennis and the two games have a lot of similarities regarding their rules and regulations. The game requires high level of physical fitness on behalf of the players, as they need to move on both sides, sometimes within a fraction of second.

History of Table Tennis in India
Table Tennis in IndiaTable Tennis in India started to be played in an organised manner from the year 1937, when the Table Tennis Federation of India came into existence in Kolkata (Calcutta). The TTFI was formed with four State Association affiliated to it. The TTFI is an active member of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) that was established in 1926. India was one of the founder members of the ITTF. After operating for over a decade to promote and improve the status of Table Tennis in India, the TTFI became successful to produce a number of quality Indian Table Tennis players. India participated in the inaugural World Championships and it also hosted the World Championship at Mumbai (Bombay) in 1952. It was the first time that the World Championship was held in Asia.

Indian AthletesIn India, athletics is counted among the most popular form of sports and is played extensively throughout the country. India has so far produced several eminent athletes, who have excelled in the international arena. Indian athletes started playing in the international athletic meets for the first time in 1948, when they took part in the London Olympic Games. The Indian team comprised 8 athletes in the 1948 Olympics, out of which 6 were men and 2 women. It was also the first time that the Indian women athletes participated in the Olympic Games.

Dalip Singh
Dalip Singh is a well known athlete who was the first sportsperson to represent India at the Olympics. He was also a good hockey player. He also owns the pride of being the first person from India who became the torchbearer at the inaugural Asian Games held at Delhi in the year 1951.

P.T. Usha
P. T. Usha is another prominent athlete of India who is also popularly known as "Golden Girl", "Running Machine", "Sprint Queen", "Payyoli Express" and by many other titles. Through her admirable career she had inspired a number of young woman athletes. She is the owner of seven national awards and had won a number of gold and silver medals in different tournaments.

Indian AthletesJyotirmoyee Sikdar
Jyotirmoyee Sikdar carved a distinct niche for herself in Indian athletics by bagging one silver medal and two gold medals at Bangkok Asian Games in 1998. She also won Arjuna Award in the year 1995. In 1998 she also became the first athlete to receive the honour of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1998.

Devendra Jhajharia
Devendra Jhajharia was the winner of first gold medal in Paralympics from India. He is a one armed javelin thrower who lost one of his arms in childhood in an accident. He was also honoured with the most prestigious sports award, the Arjuna Awards. He also won gold medals at Athens in 2004 and the 8th FESPIC Games of Korea in 2002.

Shiny Abraham
Shiny Abraham was another famous athlete of India who, for fourteen long years, remained the National Champion in 800 metres. She had also won a number of gold medals. In the year 1995 at the SAF games in Chennai, she was also declared as the best woman athlete. She was awarded with the Arjuna Award and the Chinese Journalist Award.
