Abhinav Singh Bindra, born on 28 September 1982, is an Indian former sport shooter, businessman and one of the most accomplished figures in Indian shooting. Born into a Sikh family, Bindra is also a descendant of the legendary warrior Hari Singh Nalwa, who served as commander-in-chief of the Sikh army during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. His sporting career, spanning 22 years, established him as a significant figure in Indian sport.
Historic Olympic Achievement
Abhinav Singh Bindra created history at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing when he won the gold medal in the men’s 10-metre air rifle event. The victory made him the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal and, along with subsequent achievements by other athletes, placed him among the very small group of Indians to accomplish this feat.
His success extended beyond the Olympics. At the 2006 World Championships, Bindra won the men’s 10-metre air rifle title, becoming the first Indian to simultaneously hold both the World and Olympic titles in the event. Over the course of his career, he won more than 150 medals, including seven at the Commonwealth Games and three at the Asian Games.
Recognition and International Contributions
Bindra’s achievements earned him several major honours. The Government of India conferred the Padma Bhushan on him in recognition of his contribution to sport. In 2018, he received the Blue Cross, the International Shooting Sport Federation’s (ISSF) highest honour.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Bindra finished fourth in the 10-metre air rifle final. He was also appointed a goodwill ambassador for the Indian Olympic contingent at the Rio Games by the Indian Olympic Association. On 5 September 2016, he announced his retirement from competitive shooting.
Promoting Sports, Science and Technology
Following his competitive career, Bindra continued to contribute to Indian sport through the Abhinav Bindra Foundation, a non-profit organisation focused on integrating sports, science and technology. The foundation works to promote high-performance training and develop a scientific approach to athletic preparation.
Bindra has also become an influential voice in discussions on sports policy and athlete development in India. He currently serves as a member of the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission, providing an athlete’s perspective on issues concerning the sporting community.
Continuing the Olympic Legacy
Bindra’s association with the Olympic movement continued after his retirement. At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, he carried the Olympic torch, marking another significant moment in his long association with the Games.
His experiences as an elite athlete were documented in his autobiography, A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold, co-authored with sportswriter Rohit Brijnath. Published by Harper Sport in October 2011, the book was formally released by then Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken on 27 October 2011 in New Delhi.
Abhinav Bindra’s career represents a remarkable chapter in Indian shooting. From his historic Olympic triumph to his continuing work in sports development, he has contributed not only as an athlete but also as an advocate for innovation, science and high-performance sport.
