Wrestling in India: A Rich Tapestry of History and Achievements

Wrestling, a sport deeply ingrained in India's cultural and historical fabric, has a lineage that dates back centuries. With its origins rooted in ancient texts and mythologies, Indian wrestling, or 'kushti' as it is locally known, has evolved into a fiercely competitive and celebrated sport. This article delves into the history of wrestling in India, shedding light on its evolution and the remarkable achievements of some of the nation's most renowned wrestlers.

Historical Roots

The roots of wrestling in India are entwined with the country's rich mythological and historical narratives. References to wrestling can be found in ancient texts like the Mahabharata and Ramayana, where valorous warriors engaged in the sport as part of their training. The sport's ancient form, known as 'Malla Yuddha,' was a combination of physical prowess and strategic acumen, making it an integral part of warrior culture.

Evolution of Kushti

Over the centuries, kushti underwent transformations, merging indigenous techniques with influences from Persian and Mongolian wrestling styles. Traditional akhadas (wrestling training centers) became the nurturing ground for wrestlers, not only in terms of physical training but also in terms of values like discipline, dedication, and respect. Wrestlers, or 'pehlwans,' adhered to a strict regimen, often living austere lives to maintain peak physical condition. Traditional Sports

Pioneering Achievements

India boasts a long line of wrestlers who have not only excelled on the domestic front but have also made their mark on the international stage. One such trailblazer was Gama Pehlwan, hailed as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Gama's feats are legendary, from remaining undefeated in his career that spanned several decades, to even accepting challenges from international wrestlers and strongmen. His legacy continues to inspire wrestlers in India and beyond.

Modern-Day Icons

In recent decades, Indian wrestling has seen a resurgence, with athletes achieving remarkable feats in various international competitions, including the Olympics. Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medalist, brought wrestling to the forefront of Indian sports consciousness with his bronze and silver medal wins in 2008 and 2012, respectively. His achievements sparked a renewed interest in the sport, inspiring a new generation of aspiring wrestlers.

Another name that shines brightly is Bajrang Punia. With numerous international titles under his belt, including World Championships and Commonwealth Games gold medals, Bajrang is a symbol of the relentless determination that defines Indian wrestlers. His agility and technique have earned him a reputation as one of the best in the world.

Vinesh Phogat's journey is equally inspiring. Hailing from a family deeply rooted in wrestling, Vinesh overcame adversity and injury to become the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. Her success has been pivotal in changing societal perceptions of women in sports and has encouraged a growing number of young girls to pursue wrestling.

A Global Force

Indian wrestling's achievements extend beyond the mat. The annual 'Dangal' competitions draw massive crowds and provide a platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills. The rise of the Pro Wrestling League has further amplified the sport's popularity, allowing wrestlers from various countries to compete in an exciting team format.

Wrestling in India is a testament to the country's enduring traditions and its ability to adapt and excel in the modern world. From its mythological origins to the achievements of contemporary wrestlers, the sport has etched its place in India's cultural mosaic. As Indian wrestlers continue to make their presence felt on the global stage, the legacy of kushti grows stronger, inspiring generations to embrace the values of discipline, dedication, and determination.

Floorball Federation of India (FFI)

Floorball Federation of India (FFI)Floorball is a game played and encouraged by only a few people. People are in agreement that floorball is an excellent alternative to Floor Hockey. The big difference between the two is that the rules of floor ball do not allow any high sticking, stick contact or body contact, so the game tends to be less physical than floor Hockey and more skill oriented and fast paced.

History of Floorball Federation of India
The game of Floorball has come to India just a few years back and as a result, it has not got the chance of gaining popularity among the people till now. One of the great sports enthusiastic of India, Mr. Mohd Seraj Ansari has done a great job for bringing the sport to India, by registering the Floorball Federation of India (FFI) in 2001. Mr, Ansari registered FFI under the aegis of the International Floorball Federation-IFF. However, he faced a lot of obstacles at the beginning, as there were no equipments and no supporters. Mr. Ansari then met the famous Floorball enthusiast, Mr. Jarkko Harkonen of Finland in March 2003 and they together started working for promoting the sport in India. Mr. Harkonen helped FFI to import some equipments of Floorball to India and that helped the organisation a lot.

After receiving the equipments from the Finnish manufacturers, the FFI started preparation for organising a national championship and it organised the first ever National Floorball Championship (men & women) in Maharashtra. A large number of 200 enthusiastic players and officials took part in the first 5 days of the National Training Camp in India. The Girls & Boys Team from Manipur made the longest trip of 6 days in the championship. The Uttar Pradesh team won the National Championship in Men's division and the Team of Delhi was the winner of National championship in Women's division. The FFI organised the second National camp in Lucknow, in City Montessori School (CMS) and this time, a group of children joined the camp. The FFI became successful to convince the City Montessori School (CMS) of Lucknow to adapt the game to be one of the school sports. The sword is usually around 3 foot, where as the shield is 9 inches in diameter. The Fari is made with sturdy leather and weighs around 1lbs. Fari Gatka is practiced in a 20 foot quadrangle arena. The sport involves the use of weapons by both hands, for it is believed that proper co-ordination of the two sides of the body is necessary for balanced development. Indian Cricket During 1960s

Indian Cricket During 1960sIndian cricket team during 1960s did get some significant successes that include some wonderful individual performances like the world record opening partnership of 413 runs between Pankaj Roy and Vinoo Mankad against New Zealand in 1955. The world record stood tall till the first half of this year, when the South African opening pair, Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie broke it. Mankad-Roy's partnership stood tall for as long as 53 years and the new record of 415 runs was made by Smith-McKenzie, in March, 2008, against Bangladesh. Some other brilliant performance in this decade was Subhash Gupte's leg spin magic against the West Indies in West Indies in 1952-53 and also the Jasu Patel's stand-out performance against Richie Benaud's Australians in 1958-59. Overall, this decade witnessed some of the remarkable moments in the history of Indian cricket.

While making the world record opening partnership of 413 runs for India, the great batsmen, Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy batted throughout the entire first day of the Test against New Zealand, which itself was a record. The partnership was really a valuable one for India, as it helped India clinch a huge an innings and 109-run victory in the fifth and final Test against New Zealand at home in 1955. They surpassed the previous world record of 359 runs, made by England's Len Hutton and Cyril Washbrook against South Africa in 1948-49. They showed a lot of grit and determination and batted out some hostile spells of bowling from the famous New Zealand bowlers like Cave and Hayes. Mankad eventually got out for 231 runs, that was the highest individual score by an Indian till then and the score of Roy was 173 runs.
