Agnimitra Paul is an Indian fashion designer and politician who represents the Asansol Dakshin constituency as a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Over the years, she has established herself as a prominent political leader within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, while also earning recognition for her successful career in the fashion industry.
Born in Asansol, a hilly town in West Bengal, Agnimitra Paul grew up in a family of doctors and academicians. Despite coming from an academic background, she developed a strong sense of ambition and determination from an early age. She completed her schooling at Loreto Convent, Asansol, before pursuing a Master's degree in Botany from Banwarilal Bhalotia College. She later broadened her academic qualifications by earning an MBA from Jadavpur University. Although fashion was not initially part of her career aspirations, her entrepreneurial spirit eventually led her to the industry.
Building a Successful Fashion Career
Agnimitra Paul began her journey in fashion around 2001. Soon after completing her studies, she launched her own fashion label, INGA, which quickly gained recognition and was retailed through stores in major cities across India. Her distinctive designs and creative vision helped establish her reputation in the Indian fashion industry.
Her work gained further prominence when legendary Bollywood actress Sridevi chose Agnimitra Paul to design outfits for her personal wardrobe. This association brought national attention to her brand and showcased her ability to blend elegance with contemporary fashion. Through dedication and innovation, she successfully built a respected name in the competitive world of fashion.
Entry into Politics
Agnimitra Paul entered active politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 23 March 2019. Her leadership abilities and public outreach quickly earned recognition within the party. In 2020, she was appointed President of the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal, succeeding Locket Chatterjee.
During her tenure, she launched the "Uma" self-defense training initiative, organizing workshops across all 23 districts of West Bengal. The programme focused on equipping women with self-defense skills while promoting awareness about safety and empowerment. The initiative reflected her commitment to strengthening women's confidence and encouraging greater participation in public life.
Political Leadership and Public Service
Agnimitra Paul has continued to rise within the BJP's organisational structure. She has served as the General Secretary of the BJP's West Bengal unit and, since January 2026, has been serving as the Vice-President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, West Bengal. These responsibilities underline her growing influence in the party's state leadership.
Following the formation of the new West Bengal government under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari, she was entrusted with the Women and Child Welfare portfolio. Her appointment was widely viewed as being aligned with the government's focus on women's welfare, safety, and empowerment. In addition, she was appointed Minister-in-Charge of the Department of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs (UD&MA), where she oversees urban planning and development across the Kolkata metropolitan region.
